Chapter 8: Spiritual Maturity

"The lord is far more interested in what we are like as people than all of our accomplishments and achievements."

In this chapter, the author points out how a leadership role in the church should not be filled by an immature Christian. When an immature Christian is in charge of leading worship, they will become prideful when praised and this causes tension between leaders in the church. The three reasons why this may occur is 1. The pastor could have made a poor decision when choosing a leader, 2. The pastor did not effectively mentor the leader, or 3. The congregation gave the leader too much praise.

I agree with the author in that we should try hard to find a leader who is spiritually mature. In order for people to follow, you need to know where you're going. With this in mind, it's interesting that Valley trusts students to lead worship because we are all spiritually immature to some extent...

I've definitely seen how over-praise can be a negative thing too. When people are giving a certain person to much praise, that person will start doing what they do so that they can receive that praise again, rather than wanting to do what they do just to praise God. Their motivations and intentions are skewed.

I guess the best thing we can do is to keep each other in check and keep our focus on what's important: our relationships with God.

  1. I like the fact you have pointed out the fact that the role of a leader cannot be filled be an immature Chrsitian. I definitely agree with the idea that in order for others to want to listen to you and follow you, you need to have your goals and life together.

  2. I love how you ended this post. That's what it all comes down to - our relationships with God. That's how we mature, that's how we worship, that's what affects every part of our lives. Just by strengthening that our relationships with God, we will mature spiritually and in every part of our lives.

  4. Everything in this chapter is truth and wisdom Christa, I love how you put everything in your summary. Staying humble can be a struggle if we are given too much praise, our lives should be reflections of God's influence in it.
